Car alarms should be banned

We have all been assaulted late at night by ear piercing shrills and screams from car alarms.  Nothing is worse than to be woken up out of a deep sleep to hear a annoying car alarm going off for 10 minutes or more.  Many owners, especially in big cities, park their cars far away from where they are, so they have no idea their alarm is going off and will continue to do so until it is turned off (some alarms will auto shutoff after 5 or 10 minutes if there is no other activity to set it off again, but many just continue until the owner shuts it off).  Car alarms, once thought of as a necessity and cool with names like Viper and Executive, are now seen as horrible annoyances to anyone in the nearby vicinity.

It doesn’t matter what city you are in or even if you live in the suburbs.  Any densely populated area will have its share of car alarm problems.  Do we have to live with this annoyance – absolutely not.  Something can and is being done about it and you can help.  Many cities like New York City, Los Angeles and others are considering bans and fines for noise ordinance violations and similar caused by these car alarms.  This is not to say that car alarms should be made illegal, but that the car alarm manufacturers should make their alarms more environmental friendly.  These alarms should not be able to be triggered by a stray cat walking on or near a car – this actually does happen as some car alarms are just way too sensitive.  Some car alarms can actually be set off by a slight breeze.

Also, if you are going to use a car alarm, either be within hearing range of your car to shut it off or respond quickly to see what set it off.  This is a part of responsible ownership and being concerned for others who may be trying to enjoy some peace and quiet or even be sleeping (as the majority of car alarms go off in the middle of the night).  Another good idea is having a pager or similar hand held device that will warn the user their alarm is going off and that they can reset by quickly pressing a button if they are not close enough to reset it by the car.  Another idea would be if you are not going to be within hearing range of your car don’t use the alarm because people have grown so annoyed by car alarms that they will not care if someone is breaking into your car and will probably, actually, thank them for driving off with the damn thing.

The whole idea here is that although car alarms used to provide an added level of security to your car and valuables, they have actually crossed the line and become more of a annoyance than a helpful item.  Regardless what the ads and manufacturers say, car alarms are not effective and do not deter professional thieves (whom are responsible for over 90% of all auto thefts – according to the National Institute for Highway Safety).  What is much more effective according to the New York State Troopers Association is take your valuables with you and never leave them in your car (especially don’t leave them in plain site – you wouldn’t believe how many people do this – or Christmas presents while Christmas shopping).  Don’t leave your car unlocked and pay attention to your local police websites about auto theft reports.  Don’t go to risky or high crime areas.  Have your windows etched ($25 through the internet for VIN number etching).  These items will do more than a car alarm which most thieves and people have grown ignorant to.
