First check your car.  Do you have a spare tire.  This may sound obvious, but you would not believe the number of people that just assume its in there.  Yes, every new car comes with either a full sized spare tire or a smaller doughnut spare tire.  The problem is that many used cars do not have them and the used car dealers rarely, if ever, check for this.  Their interest is in selling you the car, not in your safety and piece of mind.  You need to check and make sure.  While your at it check for the jack and lug nut wrench.  Also it is a good idea to check the air in your spare every time you check the air in your main tires.  This should be done at every gas fill up.  Spares do fail on occasion and no time would be worse to find out then when you are stranded in the middle of the night in a bad section of town.

Once you’ve checked for all of the necessary items, it would probably be a good idea to try it yourself to make sure you know how to do it.  Better yet, have a friend whom is a mechanic or similar watch and give you pointers.  Everyone assumes they know how to do it, but there are some tips that most people do not know like you loosen the lugnuts before lifting the car and tire.  If you do not do this you will have a hell of a time trying to get them off with the wheel in the air.  Also it is not safe to completely remove the lugnuts until the wheel is completely in the air, the wheel could fall off prematurely and cause damage to the wheel, it could cause the car to shift and even fall off the jack.
